Calvin Bassey return expected April 11 as Fulham defender recovers from back injury, missing only Nigeria’s March friendlies

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey is set to return to action on April 11, missing only Nigeria’s March friendlies after withdrawing from the Super Eagles squad with a back injury, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Bassey had been included in coach Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad but pulled out last week. Trabzonspor’s Chibuike Nwaiwu was called up as his replacement.

The decision came as a surprise, given that the 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Burnley just before the international break.

The projected April 11 return suggests the injury is minor and may have been a precautionary measure.

Fulham do not have a league fixture immediately after the international break, following their FA Cup exit, meaning Bassey’s first match back is likely to be a crucial away clash against Liverpool at Anfield.

The timing is vital for Fulham, who are pushing for European qualification.

The Cottagers currently sit ninth in the Premier League, five points behind fifth-placed Liverpool with seven matches remaining.

Bassey’s presence will be key as they aim to maintain their push.

Bassey has been a pivotal figure for Fulham this season, featuring in 23 of 31 league matches, missing only the seven games during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
