Lagos announces Eko Bridge closure from May 12 for safety investigations and urgent repair works

The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of a section of Eko Bridge outbound to Lagos Island for safety investigations and repair works.

The state Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.

According to Osiyemi, the Eko Bridge closure will begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and will affect the section between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa.

He explained that the inward Lagos Island carriageway would remain accessible to motorists throughout the repair period.

“In view of the closure between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, members of the motoring public are advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge to access their desired destinations,” the statement read.

Osiyemi added that traffic and security personnel would be stationed along alternative routes to manage movement and minimise disruption for commuters.

The latest Eko Bridge closure comes days after the Federal Government of Nigeria ordered the immediate shutdown of part of the bridge network as construction of a new Carter Bridge formally commenced.

Speaking during a project handover ceremony on Lagos Island, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, said structural assessments had uncovered serious defects in major bridge infrastructure across Lagos.

Umahi revealed that inspections carried out since 2013, alongside more recent underwater evaluations, showed that some of the supporting piles beneath Carter Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge had shifted.

Eko Bridge remains one of the three major bridges connecting Lagos Island with the mainland, alongside Carter Bridge and the Third Mainland Bridge.

The emergency repairs are expected to intensify traffic pressure across Lagos as commuters adjust to alternative routes during the rehabilitation exercise.
