Nigerian woman fake passport case ends in Ghana jail term after forged nationality documents were used in passport application

A Ghanaian court has sentenced a 41-year-old Nigerian woman, Franca Wilson, to six months in prison for attempting to obtain a Ghanaian passport using forged nationality documents.

The Ghana Immigration Service confirmed the conviction in a report published by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday.

According to earlier reports by Citi Newsroom, Franca Wilson, who works as a welder, pleaded guilty before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on May 12, 2026.

The court sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour on three counts, with all sentences ordered to run concurrently.

Investigators said Franca Wilson was arrested on April 24, 2026, at the Accra Passport Application Centre after immigration officers detected inconsistencies in her nationality claims during screening procedures.

“She was subsequently referred to the National Enforcement Department at the GIS Headquarters for further investigations,” the Ghana Immigration Service stated.

Further investigations revealed that Franca Wilson is a Nigerian citizen born in Rivers State to Nigerian parents.

Authorities alleged that she submitted a forged birth certificate claiming she was born in Somanya in Ghana’s Eastern Region to a Ghanaian mother.

The Ghana Immigration Service added that Franca Wilson failed to provide credible information about the alleged Ghanaian parent during questioning.

The case has renewed attention on incidents involving Nigerians prosecuted in Ghana over fraud and identity-related offences.

In December 2025, a Ghanaian court sentenced two Nigerians, Ike Isaac, 20, and Emmanuel Egbe, 24, to 12 months’ imprisonment each for attempting to obtain Ghana Cards using false identities.

The Madina District Court II convicted both men after prosecutors established that they fraudulently attempted to acquire Ghana’s national identity cards.

The latest conviction highlights continuing efforts by Ghanaian authorities to clamp down on identity fraud and document forgery within the country’s immigration and passport system.
