ABU students win Huawei Global Finals honours, securing top awards in cloud computing, AI innovation and technology excellence

Students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, have emerged among the world’s leading technology talents after winning three major awards at the 10th Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals in Shenzhen, China, outperforming teams from 40 countries in cloud computing, artificial intelligence and innovation.

The students secured first position in the Cloud track, finished second in the Computing category and claimed the grand prize in the AI/Innovation category with an innovative project known as ParaVision.

The team also received the prestigious Women in Tech Award alongside the Nigeria Network Team during the competition’s award ceremony held on June 5.

The Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals took place from June 2 to June 5 and attracted 177 teams from around the world competing in network, cloud, computing and AI/innovation categories.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Ahmadu Bello University’s Public Affairs Directorate, the achievement highlights the institution’s growing influence in technology education, innovation and digital skills development.

The competition began in October 2025 with more than 220,000 students participating globally before progressing through national and regional qualifying stages.

The ABU students earned their place at the global finals after emerging successful at Nigeria’s national finals in December 2025 and subsequently excelling at the Southern Africa regional finals in March 2026.

“At the award ceremony in Shenzhen, China, after the global finals, the students received two grand prizes – first position in Cloud and second position in Computing,” the university stated.

A standout moment came when TeamABU2026 won the grand prize in the AI/Innovation category with ParaVision, an advanced healthcare-focused artificial intelligence solution.

The university described ParaVision as an AI-powered system built on the Orange Pi AIPro platform using Huawei’s Ascend 310B4 chip.

According to the institution, the technology is capable of conducting medical tests either simultaneously or independently and producing printed laboratory reports in less than three minutes.

The solution also features multilingual capabilities, supporting languages including French, Arabic, Chinese and Swahili.

The university noted that contestants in the network, cloud and computing categories were required to complete an intensive eight-hour laboratory challenge designed to test their ability to solve complex real-world technological problems.

Meanwhile, participants in the AI/Innovation category developed artificial intelligence-based solutions using Huawei technologies, a segment widely regarded as the competition’s most demanding and prestigious track.

The victorious students are Kumba-Banna Tekanyi of Computer Engineering, Yakubu Musa Yakubu of Computer Science, Adekunle Abdulroqeeb Oladimeji of Electrical Engineering and Wakili Sefiu Bolaji of Computer Engineering.

Other team members include Yunus Muhammad and Ruqayyah Hassan Labo from Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, as well as Khadija Khalid and Grace Temitayo Olorunfemi from Computer Engineering.

The students were mentored by Dr Bashir Halliru Sani of the Institute of Agriculture and Information and Communication Technology and Dr Zaharaddeen Haruna of the Department of Computer Engineering.

Senior university officials who attended the event included Vice-Chancellor Adamu Ahmed, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Raymond Bako, Director of the Distance Learning Centre Muhammed Bashir Mu’azu and Director of the Institute of Agriculture and Information and Communication Technology Emmanuel Adewale Adedokun.

The university described the achievement as a powerful demonstration of its commitment to producing globally competitive graduates equipped to drive technological advancement and develop solutions to real-world challenges.
