Alex Iwobi marks his 100th Nigeria appearance as Super Eagles lose 2-1 to Portugal in an international friendly in Leiria

Nigeria international and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi marked his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles on Wednesday night at the Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa, as Nigeria suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly.

Alex Iwobi 100th Nigeria Appearance was formally recognised by the Nigeria Football Federation before kick-off, with the 30-year-old presented a commemorative plaque in honour of reaching a major international milestone.

The midfielder became only the fourth Nigerian player to reach 100 caps, joining an elite group that includes Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa, underlining his long-standing contribution to the national team.

Despite the pre-match celebrations, Nigeria found themselves tested early as Portugal created several attacking openings, with Cristiano Ronaldo going close before the Super Eagles began to settle into the contest.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Pedro Neto finished a well-worked move to give the hosts the lead.

Nigeria responded positively and restored parity before the break through Akor Adams, who calmly converted after a sharp exchange with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Alex Iwobi 100th Nigeria Appearance was further marked by a determined midfield display as Nigeria remained competitive against a strong Portuguese side, with goalkeeper Maduka Okoye also producing key saves to keep the score level for long spells.

However, Portugal regained control in the second half and went ahead again through Francisco Conceição, who struck decisively from a tight angle after beating his marker.

Nigeria pushed for a late equaliser but were unable to break down a disciplined Portuguese defence as Roberto Martínez’s side held on for victory, extending their own unbeaten run.

The result ended Nigeria’s six-match unbeaten streak, though the performance offered encouraging signs for the Super Eagles despite the absence of key forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Alex Iwobi’s milestone appearance remained a standout moment on a difficult night, reflecting his consistency and longevity since making his international debut in 2015, during which he has recorded 10 goals and eight assists for Nigeria.
