João Pedro Brazil squad return headlines Carlo Ancelotti’s rebuild as the coach introduces younger players ahead of Brazil’s next major tournaments

João Pedro, Chelsea forward, and Raphinha, Barcelona captain, have returned to the Brazil squad as head coach Carlo Ancelotti begins rebuilding the five-time world champions after their disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign, with friendlies against Australia and India scheduled during the September and October international window.

The recall of João Pedro is one of the most notable features of Ancelotti’s 26-man squad, after the Chelsea striker was left out of Brazil’s World Cup group.

Raphinha’s return is equally significant. The Barcelona forward missed the tournament through a hamstring injury after being expected to play an important role in Ancelotti’s plans.

The latest selection marks the beginning of a new cycle for Brazil, with Ancelotti combining established figures with a group of younger players who could form the backbone of the national side over the coming years.

Vinicius Junior, Endrick, Chelsea’s Estêvão, Tottenham forward Rayan, Atlético Madrid forward Samuel Lino and João Pedro are among the attacking options included in the squad.

Ancelotti has also retained several experienced players, including Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães, Marquinhos and Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães.

Eight players who were not part of Brazil’s World Cup squad have also received opportunities, underlining the Italian coach’s willingness to broaden his options.

Among the newcomers are goalkeeper Pedro Morisco, defenders Arthur Dias and Jair, midfielder Breno Bidon and Gabriel Bontempo.

Ancelotti said the upcoming fixtures would allow him to assess emerging talent while laying the groundwork for Brazil’s next generation.

“With these three friendly matches, we will begin a new cycle to project the National Team towards the goals of the coming years, which are the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup,” Ancelotti said.

“We will take advantage of these three friendlies to call up new players for the National Team, especially young players, who can showcase their talent in the coming years.”

The João Pedro Brazil squad return is particularly noteworthy because of the striker’s omission from the World Cup. His inclusion gives Ancelotti another option in an attack that is undergoing a gradual generational shift.

Neymar is also absent from the new squad after indicating that he intended to retire from international football following the World Cup.

The changes point towards a Brazil side being shaped with the longer term in mind rather than relying solely on players who featured prominently during the previous campaign.

The first tests will come against Australia. Brazil will meet the Socceroos at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville on September 25 before facing them again at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on September 29.

Ancelotti’s side will then travel to Kolkata to face India at Salt Lake Stadium on October 3.

The Brazil-India meeting will be the countries’ first senior international encounter, while Brazil’s previous match against Australia ended in a 4-0 victory in Melbourne in June 2017.

Brazil are also scheduled to tour Asia in November, with matches against Japan on November 14 and Singapore on November 17.

The extended international window gives Ancelotti valuable time to examine his squad and establish the tactical foundations of his new cycle.

The coach will be particularly interested in how returning players such as Raphinha and João Pedro fit alongside established stars and the emerging generation.

The rebuild comes with significant expectations. Brazil’s reputation demands success, but Ancelotti will also need to develop a team capable of challenging for the 2028 Copa América and the 2030 World Cup.

For João Pedro, the recall represents a fresh opportunity after missing the biggest international stage. For Raphinha, it offers a route back into the national side after an injury denied him the chance to contribute at the World Cup.

Together, their returns provide an encouraging starting point for Ancelotti as Brazil look beyond a disappointing tournament and towards a new era.

Mbappe Mao Zedong comment sparks backlash in China, prompting an apology from the Real Madrid star and the termination of two brand partnerships

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has apologised over an “ill-judged” comment about former Chinese leader Mao Zedong after Chinese drinks manufacturer Dongpeng Beverage and dairy producer Mengniu terminated their partnerships with the French football star.

Mbappe, who captains France’s national team, issued the apology on his X account on Tuesday, acknowledging that his remarks had upset people in China and Chinese communities worldwide.

“My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world. I apologise to everyone my words have upset,” he said.

The controversy followed the circulation of a video in which the 27-year-old footballer reacted to an internet meme featuring his face superimposed on that of a Chinese leader.

He reportedly described it as the funniest meme he had seen and referred to the figure as “some guy — I think he’s a Chinese dictator”, in an apparent reference to Mao.

Dongpeng Beverage announced on Tuesday that it was ending its partnership with Mbappe, citing its opposition to comments considered offensive to Chinese national sentiment.

“Our company firmly opposes and has a zero-tolerance policy towards any behaviour that offends national sentiments,” the company said.

“With immediate effect, we are terminating all cooperation with Kylian Mbappe,” it added.

Mengniu, one of China’s largest dairy producers, also announced that it was ending its partnership with the Real Madrid forward.

“With immediate effect, our company is terminating all cooperation with Kylian Mbappe,” the company said, adding that it maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards words or actions that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.

The announcements generated widespread discussion on Chinese social media platform Weibo, where Dongpeng’s decision to end its partnership with the footballer became a trending topic.

Mao, who led the Chinese Communist Party and died in 1976, remains a highly sensitive historical and political figure in China.

Comments perceived as disrespectful towards him can provoke strong public reactions.

Mbappe had previously addressed memes comparing him to historical dictators in an interview with French sports newspaper L’Equipe in September.

“There’s a part of it that’s funny. You can tell that, for some people, it’s all in good fun. But there is another part that’s a bit less funny because of the damage such people have caused throughout history,” he said.

He added that being compared with individuals responsible for mass killings and widespread suffering was uncomfortable.

“Being compared to individuals who murder others, or who have brought misery to millions upon millions of people — well, I don’t think I’ve ever done anything like that in my life,” Mbappe said.

International sports figures have previously faced commercial and public backlash in China over politically sensitive comments concerning Taiwan, Tibet and Hong Kong.

In 2019, a social media post by then-Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressing support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong prompted Chinese authorities and businesses to suspend NBA-related activities.

NBA games were subsequently absent from Chinese state television broadcasts for about a year.

In 2023, former NBA player Dwight Howard also faced criticism on Chinese social media after referring to Taiwan as a country in a video featuring Taiwan’s then vice president, Lai Ching-te.

Mbappe’s apology comes amid the fallout from the latest controversy and the decisions by Dongpeng Beverage and Mengniu to end their commercial relationships with the footballer.
