Kylian Mbappe says this could be his year for the Ballon d’Or after finishing as top scorer in the World Cup, Champions League and La Liga

Kylian Mbappe, the France and Real Madrid forward, said on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, that he feels confident of winning the Ballon d’Or, speaking to RFI as the race for the award heads towards the ceremony in London on 26 October.

The 27 year old was top scorer at the World Cup in the summer, and in last season’s Champions League and La Liga.

France went out in the World Cup semi finals. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter finals.

Kylian Mbappe argued that voters would name a player, not a team.

“They won’t announce a team in the envelope; they will announce a player,” he told RFI. “The ability to perform individually and produce eye-catching moments, that’s what stands out to people for an award like this.”

“I was top scorer in all the biggest competitions, and I think that this could be a good year for me, and I really feel it.”

He scored 25 La Liga goals last season, 15 in the Champions League and 10 at the World Cup. That World Cup haul took his tournament record to 22 goals, the most in the competition’s history.

The field remains crowded with players who lifted trophies in 2026. Rodri, the 2025 Ballon d’Or winner, captained Spain to the World Cup. Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres won La Liga with Barcelona and the World Cup.

Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia won Ligue 1 and the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain. Harry Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

On 17 September Kylian Mbappe told Diario AS he wanted the Ballon d’Or back at Real Madrid and hoped to give Madridistas another night to celebrate.

The case he is making is individual. The obstacle is the same one voters always weigh: goals without the biggest team prize. London will settle which argument they prefer.
