An Arteta new deal has been verbally agreed at Arsenal, with a pay rise and formal paperwork still to follow, according to Fabrizio Romano

The journalist wrote that the agreement includes a pay rise and that Mikel Arteta will remain central to transfers and other football decisions. The deal is verbal at this stage. He credited Sami Mokbel of BBC Sport.

BBC Sport reported that talks had run for months. The current contract expires at the end of this season. The length of the new one has not been confirmed. It is expected to take Mikel Arteta into at least his 10th year at the club after his appointment in December 2019.

The BBC said the fresh terms include a sharp increase on his present £10 million a year, plus £5 million in bonuses.

Arsenal had not issued an official announcement when the reports landed. Reuters said it had asked the club for comment.

Co-chair Josh Kroenke said in May that keeping Mikel Arteta was a priority after Arsenal won a first league title in 22 years last season.

Last week the manager told supporters not to worry about the talks. “They don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here. I’m extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with.”

The verbal agreement ends a summer of speculation. Paperwork and a club statement would make it binding in public.

Until then, the reports describe a manager who has accepted new terms, not a contract already signed on the letterhead.
