Abiodun Ayoyinka Papa Ajasco role struggles reveal how trademark ownership limits the veteran actor’s use of the famous comedy character

Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has spoken publicly about the challenges he faces despite gaining widespread recognition for portraying the iconic character Papa Ajasco.

Abiodun Ayoyinka made the revelation during an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, explaining that trademark ownership of the character limits his ability to use the identity for personal or commercial engagements.

According to Abiodun Ayoyinka, the character Papa Ajasco is legally registered by veteran media entrepreneur Wale Adenuga, whose company Wale Adenuga Productions produces the long-running television comedy Papa Ajasco & Company.

The actor said the arrangement means he cannot freely use the character’s name, costume or identity for advertisements, performances or other private projects without formal approval.

“The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anybody that wants to use me outside wants me with the character, with everything that I have, but it has never been easy for me,” Abiodun Ayoyinka said.

He added that he does not have exclusive rights to the character despite portraying it for many years.

“I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume,” the actor explained.

Abiodun Ayoyinka said the powerful public association between him and the character has also created a professional challenge, as many people recognise him only in the famous costume and persona rather than as an individual actor.

“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa, dress like Papa, look like Papa. It is always difficult for me to do it,” he said.

The veteran performer also revealed that he previously worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.

Despite his decades-long career in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Abiodun Ayoyinka admitted that life has been difficult in recent years.

“Things have never been okay for years now. I retired five years ago, and it has never been easy for me to move around and connect with people,” he said.

The actor disclosed that he currently does not own a house or a car, describing his situation as challenging despite the fame associated with his role.

Abiodun Ayoyinka became widely known for his portrayal of Papa Ajasco, a humorous and memorable character in the popular Nigerian television comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, which gained a large following across the country and became one of the most recognised sitcoms in Nigeria.
