Akin Lewis opens up on his marriage collapse, calling it deeply painful and reflecting on how it reshaped his life and career

Veteran Nigerian actor Akin Lewis on Thursday spoke publicly about the sudden collapse of his first marriage, saying he remains unable to understand why the relationship ended years after the separation.

Akin Lewis made the disclosure while speaking on the African A-List Podcast, where he described the breakdown of the marriage as one of the most painful experiences of his life.

The actor said the abrupt end of the relationship left him deeply shaken and burdened with unanswered questions that continue to linger.

“I still don’t understand why my first wife left. Even after all these years, it remains a mystery to me,” Akin Lewis said, describing the experience as emotionally devastating.

Akin Lewis explained that the marriage collapse forced him to reassess his views on relationships and human behaviour, compelling him to turn inward and focus on personal growth.

He said the painful episode ultimately strengthened his resolve and redirected his energy towards building his career with renewed commitment.

“The sudden end of that marriage shook me deeply and it left questions I never got answers to. It caused me intense pain,” Akin Lewis said.

Beyond his personal life, the veteran actor also addressed concerns within the film industry, expressing disappointment over complaints by some producers regarding the fees charged by veteran performers.

Akin Lewis said such criticism reflects a lack of respect for actors who have dedicated decades to building the Nigerian film industry.

The actor noted that he has spent more than five decades honing his craft and contributing to cinema, stressing that experience and longevity should not be undervalued.

Akin Lewis said he would not accept being made to feel fortunate simply for being cast in films, describing such attitudes as dismissive of years of hard work and sacrifice.
