ABU AI microscope project wins €5m Horizon Europe grant to combat tropical diseases like malaria and sleeping sickness using cutting-edge digital diagnostics

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has secured a €5 million grant to develop an AI-powered microscope for diagnosing parasitic diseases.

The project, known as MultiplexAI, is one of only four globally selected under the Horizon Europe EDCTP3 Call, marking a major milestone for Nigerian research.

Dr Gloria Chechet, a molecular parasitologist and Reader in Biochemistry at ABU, leads the initiative. “This is not just a win for Ahmadu Bello University.

It’s a win for Nigeria, for African women in science, and for the millions of people still suffering the consequences of these neglected diseases,” she said.

The tool will allow health workers to detect diseases like malaria, leishmaniasis, sleeping sickness, and filariasis at the point of care.

Using smartphone integration and AI algorithms, the microscope will be able to identify multiple infections accurately, even in rural and under-resourced settings.

Prof Kabiru Bala, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, described the grant as a “historic milestone” for ABU and Nigeria’s research ecosystem.

“This achievement demonstrates the growing strength of Ahmadu Bello University in leading impactful international collaborations,” he said.

The prototype is expected to be ready within three years, with field trials planned in Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. The aim is to close diagnostic gaps and support public health efforts with smart, affordable technology.
