Abuja–Kaduna–Kano highway accelerates work on Nigeria’s northern corridor with improved infrastructure and 2026 completion in sight

Abuja–Kaduna–Kano highway is making steady and accelerated progress toward its June 2026 completion target, offering a critical boost to Nigeria’s northern transport corridor and cross-continental trade ambitions.

The 375-kilometre dual carriageway—widely known as the A2 highway—is one of Nigeria’s most important infrastructure projects.

Beginning in 2018, it forms a vital link between Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, and Kano, extending a further 11 kilometres to connect with Aminu Kano International Airport.

Running through key economic hubs such as Gwagwalada, Jere, Kaduna, Zaria, and Rijana, the highway also connects northern cities like Sokoto and Jos.

As part of the larger Lagos–Algiers Trans-African Highway, the project plugs Nigeria directly into North Africa’s trade network, cementing its place as a strategic continental artery.

Key features of the upgraded expressway include solar-powered street lighting, CCTV surveillance systems, and a fully dualised structure designed to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and promote night-time travel.

The project has been revised to a total cost of ₦761 billion, reflecting the growing scope and complexity of the construction.

Transport analysts have described the development as a transformational step for regional logistics, promising to reduce travel times, lower freight costs, and foster deeper economic integration.

While earlier delays raised public concerns, the current momentum—driven by renewed funding commitments and active federal oversight—suggests that the June 2026 goal remains realistic.
