Shagamu-Benin bridge repair begins with engineers deployed for swift, lasting fix. Ministry promises full reconstruction to restore safe traffic flow soon

Shagamu-Benin bridge repair is now underway as the Federal Ministry of Works moves quickly to address the damaged deck on the Benin-bound section of the carriageway.

The ministry assured road users of a swift and permanent solution after the discovery of a visible puncture on the bridge’s double carriageway.

In a statement issued by Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Works, the ministry revealed that Minister David Umahi personally ordered the immediate dispatch of engineers to the site located at the Edo-Ondo border.

The affected bridge, constructed in 1981, is showing signs of age-related deterioration such as cracks and structural weaknesses, which led to the damage.

The ministry noted this is consistent with the natural wear expected over decades and promised a comprehensive fix.

“The intervention includes removing and rebuilding the entire deck slab on the two sets of bridges in the area using innovative engineering technology,” the statement confirmed.

The project is expected to take up to 45 days after concrete works to fully reopen the carriageway safely.

Minister Umahi apologized for any inconvenience and assured coordinated traffic management with the Federal Road Safety Corps to minimize disruptions.

He also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide initiative to rehabilitate over 30 bridges in 2025, with this repair being a top priority.

The minister thanked a concerned citizen who raised the alarm about the bridge damage, encouraging public support for the ongoing “Renewed Hope” agenda focused on revitalizing Nigeria’s critical road infrastructure.

Umahi emphasized the government’s vision of expanding the road network as a key driver for economic growth, linking improved transportation to advances in healthcare, education, tourism, and industrialization.
