Abuja–Kaduna train derailment prompts Minister Alkali to set up a probe committee to investigate causes and recommend safety improvements

Abuja–Kaduna train derailment of August 26, 2025, has prompted the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, to establish an investigation committee.

The incident occurred near Jerre while the train was en route from Abuja to Kaduna, raising renewed concerns over passenger safety on one of Nigeria’s busiest rail corridors.

According to a statement by the ministry’s Director of Press and Information, Janet McDickson Noah, the committee will review both the immediate and underlying causes of the derailment.

It is also tasked with recommending preventive measures and strategies to enhance rail safety and efficiency nationwide.

Alkali, while stressing the government’s priority on safeguarding passengers, appointed Musa O. Ibrahim as the committee chairman.

Other members include Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu, Engr. Zirra Finbar, Barr. Omotola Olusegun (secretary), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe, along with representatives from Technics Engineering, CCECC, civil society groups, and selected passengers.

The committee is expected to submit its findings and propose actionable solutions to prevent future rail mishaps.
