Adekunle Gold shares his lifelong battle with sickle cell anemia, urges fans to know their genotype, and discusses managing periodic health crises

Afrobeats singer Adekunle Gold, born Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko, has revealed that he continues to live with sickle cell anemia, correcting the misconception that he is fully free from the disease.

In a recent interview that surfaced online, the ‘Party No Dey Stop’ star admitted, “I still have crises,” confirming that he has been on lifelong medication since the age of five.

He used the platform to stress the importance of genotype testing, especially in Nigeria, where awareness of sickle cell is higher but preventive measures remain limited.

“Where sickle cell is more popular, or where people know it most, is my country Nigeria… And that’s why knowing your genotype is very important,” Adekunle Gold explained.

Adekunle shared that both his parents are carriers of the sickle cell trait, which led to his diagnosis.

He recounted one of his earliest memories of a sickle cell crisis, describing severe joint and abdominal pains and a long walk to the hospital as a young child.

“The first time I noticed that I had it was the night I fell sick… my mum put me on her back and we walked miles to the hospital,” he recalled.

Now 38, he noted that while crises still occur occasionally, they are less severe thanks to careful self-care and access to resources.

Adekunle also highlighted the importance of public awareness and preventive education to reduce the number of children born with the disease.

“My vision is to make more noise about it because a lot of people don’t know about it… you should not bring many more kids that have sickle cell,” he said.
