Lookman completed the move to the Spanish club on February 3, 2026, ending nearly 18 months of transfer uncertainty.

The Nigerian joined Atalanta in 2022 from RB Leipzig, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists in 137 appearances across all competitions.

His exploits included three goals in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, helping Atalanta claim its first major trophy in 61 years.

Despite his achievements, Lookman’s relationship with the club became strained after he attempted moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan were blocked.

Tensions increased following a penalty dispute with former coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Palladino, who took over from Ivan Juric in November 2025, said: “It’s a dynamic that’s part of today’s football. Lookman received this important request, he expressed his desire to take it up, and he chose Atletico Madrid. We must respect his decision and thank him for what he’s given. We look forward with the strong players we have and with the desire to continue to amaze.”

New city, new challenges, new energy. I’m ready to give everything on the pitch and fight for these colours every time I step out there.”
