Adetokunbo Kayode urges FUTA graduates to embrace digital skills, stressing that certificates alone are no longer enough in today’s dynamic labour market

Adetokunbo Kayode has called on graduating students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure to pursue vital digital and technical skills beyond their academic certificates.

Delivering the convocation lecture at FUTA’s thirty sixth ceremony, the former Minister of Defence said young Nigerians must understand that formal education is only the foundation for their future.

Kayode explained that rapid changes in the global labour market require continuous learning, practical training and a willingness to adapt.

He told the graduates that digital literacy is no longer optional but essential for anyone aiming to compete in an increasingly technology driven world.

He urged them to take advantage of online platforms offering free or low cost training, noting that employers often value demonstrable skills above paper qualifications.

He added that with the right ability, many young people could become employers themselves, turning current economic challenges into opportunities for innovation.

Kayode, who also served as Minister of Labour, appealed to governments to integrate Technical and Vocational Education and Training into national policy so that vocational institutions can award degrees.

He stressed that improved funding, private sector partnerships and incentives such as tax breaks would strengthen Nigeria’s technical education system and empower thousands of young people.

FUTA Vice Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji revealed that 240 students graduated with first class honours out of 2,747 students.

She noted that the high number of top achievers reflects the university’s commitment to academic excellence and its expanding role in producing industry ready graduates.
