Alejandro Garnacho Explains Chelsea Exit, revealing why Champions League football and Unai Emery convinced him to join Aston Villa

Argentina international Alejandro Garnacho has explained the reasons behind his departure from Chelsea Football Club, saying the opportunity to regain confidence and compete in the UEFA Champions League with Aston Villa proved decisive in his decision to leave Stamford Bridge after just one season.

The 22-year-old completed a season-long loan move to Villa with a conditional obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Alejandro Garnacho arrived at Chelsea from Manchester United in a £40 million deal in 2025, but the winger struggled to establish himself as a regular starter despite making 43 appearances in all competitions and scoring eight goals.

Limited league starts and increasing competition for places prompted both player and club to seek a fresh opportunity during the summer transfer window.

Speaking after completing the move, Alejandro Garnacho said playing European football again was a major factor behind his decision.

“I think it’s also important to play European competitions,” Alejandro Garnacho said.

“I was looking for a club that would restore my confidence and help me return to the player I was during my early years at Manchester United. I spoke with Unai before I arrived here, and he instilled that confidence in me. Participating in the Champions League is significant because it represents the pinnacle of football. We are set to compete in it this season, and I am truly delighted.”

Although Alejandro Garnacho did not directly criticise Chelsea, the emphasis on Champions League football has been widely interpreted as a subtle reference to the Blues’ failure to qualify for European competition this season after finishing 10th in the Premier League.
