Alex Iwobi has matched Shola Ameobi’s record of 298 Premier League appearances, becoming Nigeria’s joint-highest appearance maker in England’s top flight

Alex Iwobi has etched his name into Premier League history by equalling Shola Ameobi’s long-standing record of 298 appearances — the most by any Nigerian in the competition’s history.

The Super Eagles midfielder reached the milestone on Friday night when he started for Fulham in their away fixture against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

The appearance sees him join Ameobi at the summit of Nigeria’s all-time Premier League appearance chart.

Iwobi’s feat came just two days after Fulham marked Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day with a colourful celebration at their Motspur Park training ground.

The event featured Nigerian music, green decorations, and traditional outfits, with the club’s players — including Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Samuel Chukwueze — donning green jerseys to honour the occasion.

The 28-year-old began his Premier League journey at Arsenal, where he broke into the first team under Arsène Wenger before moving to Everton in 2019 and later to Fulham.

Over nearly a decade in England’s top flight, Alex Iwobi has earned praise for his versatility, maturity, and tireless work ethic — transitioning seamlessly from a creative winger to a disciplined, box-to-box midfielder.

Behind Iwobi and Ameobi on Nigeria’s all-time list are legends such as Nwankwo Kanu (273 appearances), Yakubu Aiyegbeni (252), and John Obi Mikel (249).

With the next generation — including Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho — currently out of the Premier League, Iwobi stands as Nigeria’s last active player in the elite 200+ club.
