Ambassador Ibironke Adefowope death has been officially announced, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to public service, education and diplomacy.

The former Nigerian High Commissioner to Zambia and Malawi passed away at the age of 73.

Born on 23 February 1952 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Ambassador Adefowope was known for her academic brilliance and commitment to national service.

Her early education began at the distinguished Saint Anne’s School, Molete, in what was then the capital of the Western Region of Nigeria. She later attended the International School of the University of Ibadan (ISI), where she completed her Advanced Level studies.

Driven by a thirst for knowledge and supported by parents who valued education deeply reportedly willing to go to any length to ensure their children had the best—she proceeded to the United States, where she earned both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Adefowope’s diplomatic career earned her widespread respect, particularly during her tenure as High Commissioner, where she represented Nigeria with distinction in southern Africa.

In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.

Until her passing, she remained active in community affairs as a member of the Elders Council of Oyo State, providing guidance on social and political matters in her home region.

“She was a trailblazer whose life was defined by diplomacy, education and service,” a family spokesperson said.
