Arthur Okonkwo keeps a clean sheet on his Super Eagles debut as Nigeria defeat Zimbabwe 2-0 to reach the Unity Cup final

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo made an impressive start to his international career on Tuesday, keeping a clean sheet on his senior debut as Nigeria defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 to reach the final of the 2026 Unity Cup.

Arthur Okonkwo Nigeria debut marked a significant milestone for the 24-year-old shot-stopper, who had previously represented England at youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria through his parents.

FIFA had confirmed his eligibility for the Super Eagles in April, paving the way for his first senior appearance.

Okonkwo was named in the starting line-up by coach Eric Chelle and delivered a composed performance between the posts as Nigeria secured a comfortable victory.

His clean sheet was also acknowledged by his club, Wrexham AFC, which celebrated the achievement on social media shortly after the match.

The goalkeeper, who joined Wrexham initially on loan from Arsenal in 2023 before completing a permanent move in 2024, has been a key figure in the club’s recent rise.

He played a major role in back-to-back promotions and was included in the League Two Team of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign.

Okonkwo has made 39 appearances this season, recording 10 clean sheets and helping Wrexham push strongly in the Championship.

Following his national team call-up, the goalkeeper expressed excitement about representing Nigeria, describing it as a proud and long-awaited opportunity.
