ASUU strike warning looms at Dangote University as the union accuses management of poor transparency, unpaid entitlements, and neglect of staff welfare

ASUU strike warning has been issued by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, over what it describes as poor governance, lack of transparency, and disregard for staff welfare.

In a statement released by the union, ASUU accused the university administration of “insubordination, lack of transparency, and poor accountability,” saying the situation has negatively impacted both academic quality and research output.

The statement, jointly signed by branch chairman Dr Aliyu Yusuf Ahmad and secretary Dr Abubakar Ibrahim Tukur, alleged that the management failed to release audited financial statements for 2023 and 2024, and did not provide Budget Performance Reports for 20 consecutive quarters between January 2020 and December 2024 — a violation of institutional laws, according to the union.

ASUU also questioned what it termed “bogus and unexplained expenditure” in the budget reports for the first and second quarters of 2025, accusing the administration of financial opacity.

Beyond finances, the union lamented the shortage of academic staff, particularly in new departments, and condemned the continued engagement of some lecturers on contract instead of permanent terms.

It further highlighted the poor power supply across the campus and the non-payment of outstanding entitlements, which it said had demoralised staff and disrupted teaching schedules.

ASUU urged stakeholders and citizens of Kano State to intervene and prevail on the Vice Chancellor to address the grievances in line with the university’s enabling laws and with a sense of responsibility.

“The union calls on stakeholders and good citizens of the state to prevail on the Vice Chancellor to ensure quick resolution of the issues stated and to run the University in strict compliance with enabling laws and with a sense of patriotism in order to avoid industrial disharmony,” the statement read.

The union warned that if the issues are not urgently resolved, it may have no choice but to embark on industrial action, potentially disrupting academic activities at the institution.

ASUU’s position marks a growing tension within the university sector, where staff unions have repeatedly demanded greater accountability and improved working conditions amid financial challenges facing public institutions.
