Dangote University excursion cancellation sees students moved to Tiga Dam after security concerns halted New Bussa trip in Kano State

Authorities at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology have on Thursday, May 28, 2026, cancelled a planned students’ excursion to New Bussa in Niger State, redirecting the exercise to Tiga Dam in Kano State following renewed security concerns raised by parents and stakeholders.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, confirmed that the decision was taken after a careful assessment of prevailing security reports linked to the proposed eight-week mandatory field exercise for Level 400 Fisheries students.

Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, Vice Chancellor of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, stated that the institution had already reviewed the security situation in the area and had earlier rejected the initial plan before public concerns escalated.

According to the Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, the Vice Chancellor had directed the Department of Fisheries to immediately identify a safer alternative location for the academic exercise.

Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi explained that this directive led to the selection of Tiga Dam, ensuring that students would no longer be required to travel outside Kano State for the programme.

The Dangote University excursion cancellation was described by the institution as a decisive and responsible intervention aimed at safeguarding students while preserving academic continuity.

In a statement, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi reaffirmed that student safety remains a top priority, stressing that the management does not compromise on welfare both on and off campus.

He also dismissed concerns circulating among parents, insisting that there was no intention at any point to proceed with a trip to New Bussa or any other location considered insecure.

The university urged calm among stakeholders, assuring that the revised arrangement at Tiga Dam would still deliver the required field training outcomes without exposing students to unnecessary risk.

The development comes amid heightened sensitivity across tertiary institutions in northern Nigeria, where security considerations increasingly shape decisions around field-based academic activities.
