Barau sponsors 42 bills in three years, with five already signed into law as the 10th National Assembly marks its third anniversary

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has sponsored 42 bills within the first three years of the 10th National Assembly, with five of the proposed legislations already enacted into law, according to official Senate records.

The legislative record, covering the period from June 13, 2023, to June 13, 2026, was highlighted in a statement issued on Friday by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy Senate President, as the National Assembly marked its third anniversary.

The statement described the achievement as a significant milestone reflecting sustained legislative engagement across key sectors of governance, economic development and social policy.

According to data published in The Parliamentarian Magazine, a publication of the Deputy Senate President’s media office, Senator Barau Jibrin, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, maintained a steady pace of bill sponsorship throughout the period.

The statement noted that the lawmaker’s legislative contributions have reinforced his standing as one of the leading bill sponsors in the upper chamber.

“Sponsoring forty-two bills in three years is, without doubt, a colossal legislative feat. Senator Barau, fondly called ‘Maliya’, has always been known as someone who raises the bar to enviable heights in all his endeavours,” the statement said.

It further highlighted the senator’s leadership responsibilities within both the National Assembly and the regional parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“The Deputy Senate President has achieved this alongside the demanding duties of supporting the Senate President in providing leadership for the Senate.

“At the sub-regional legislature, the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau as the First Deputy Speaker has been playing a key role in the leadership of the regional assembly,” the statement added.

A breakdown of the legislative output shows that Senator Barau sponsored 13 bills in 2023, nine in 2024, 17 in 2025 and three in 2026.

The bills span a broad range of sectors, including constitutional reform, education, healthcare, agriculture, energy, digital economy and institutional governance.

Among the five bills that have already completed the legislative process and become law are the North West Development Commission Bill, the National Identity Management Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, the Agricultural Research Council (Amendment) Bill, the Federal Medical Centre, Gwarzo Establishment Bill, and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo Establishment Bill.

The statement concluded that the legislative record demonstrates consistent policy engagement and institutional productivity as the 10th National Assembly reaches its mid-term milestone.

The 10th National Assembly was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, following a proclamation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and formally marks its third anniversary on June 13, 2026.
