Benue IDP Camp Births hit 49 in one month. Over 380 pregnant women and 490 others accessed antenatal care at the Makurdi camp clinic, says BSPHCB

Benue IDP Camp Births have surged dramatically, with 49 babies born in just one month at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp located at the International Market in Makurdi.

This revelation came from Mrs. Grace Ashi Wende, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary HealthCare Board (BSPHCB), during a recent Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) visit to the camp.

Wende disclosed that 380 pregnant women at the camp are nearing delivery, and over 490 received antenatal care (ANC) services over the same period.

“The 49th baby has safely been delivered at the Ultramodern Market IDP camp clinic,” she announced proudly, commending a multidisciplinary healthcare team and partner agencies like UNICEF and Save the Children International for their unwavering support.

The clinic, which has become a critical health hub, also recorded 5,511 consultations between June 16 and July 14. Of these, 2,980 were adults, including 339 males and 2,641 females.

Another 2,030 children aged 0–9 years, and 496 adolescents sought care during this period.

Thanks to the joint effort of the Benue State Ministry of Health (SMOH) and international partners, the camp now has a borehole and a 3HP hybrid submersible pump improving access to clean water and hygiene services.

However, challenges remain. Out of 44 patients referred to Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), none have been discharged yet, highlighting the ongoing strain on the health system.

With over 2,336 households and 5,294 individuals seeking refuge at the Makurdi camp, including 2,536 children, the clinic remains a lifeline—especially for expectant mothers.
