Buni condemns Maiduguri bombings, donates N10m to victims and urges vigilance after deadly explosions that killed over 23 people

Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, on Wednesday condoled with the government and people of Borno State and families of victims following deadly bomb explosions in Maiduguri that claimed more than 23 lives.

The governor, who is currently in Mecca performing the lesser Hajj, was represented during a sympathy visit by his deputy, Idi Gubana, who delivered a message of solidarity to the affected communities.

Buni described the incident as tragic and deeply unsettling, noting that innocent residents carrying out daily activities had fallen victim to senseless violence.

He said Yobe State shares in the grief of Borno, emphasising the long-standing ties between both states.

“Our hearts bleed as innocent citizens, who were merely going about their lawful daily activities, have become victims of this senseless violence,” the governor said in a message conveyed by Gubana.

The Yobe governor urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible information, stressing that public cooperation remains critical to preventing further attacks.

“Security is a collective responsibility. We must remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious movements to the relevant authorities,” he added.

Reaffirming regional unity, Buni said the attack served as a stark reminder of the shared security challenges facing both states.

He maintained that progress made in counter-insurgency efforts must not be derailed by recent events.

As part of a compassionate response, the Yobe State Government announced a donation of N10m to support families affected by the explosions, a move aimed at providing immediate relief amid grief and disruption.

Responding on behalf of the Borno State Government, Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur expressed appreciation for the visit and support, describing it as a powerful gesture of solidarity.

Kadafur noted that ongoing military operations in the North-East often lead to insurgents infiltrating urban areas using improvised explosive devices, thereby increasing risks to civilian populations.

He called for sustained collaboration between neighbouring states and their citizens to confront the recurring threat, urging communities to remain united and prayerful.

“We must continue to work together and support security agencies to find lasting solutions to these challenges,” Kadafur said.

The Yobe delegation included senior government officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, commissioners, special advisers and aides, underscoring the importance attached to the visit.
