Former Super Eagles defender Juwon Oshaniwa expresses concern over Calvin Bassey’s absence from Fulham’s starting XI after AFCON 2025

Former Super Eagles defender Juwon Oshaniwa has raised concerns over Calvin Bassey’s continued absence from Fulham’s starting line-up following his return from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Oshaniwa, who won AFCON with Nigeria under Stephen Keshi in 2013, expressed worry about the 26-year-old centre-back’s situation at the Cottagers but encouraged him to keep working hard in training.

Bassey was a standout for Fulham last season, winning Player of the Season after starting 34 Premier League matches.

This season, he retained a starting role in every league game until joining the Super Eagles for the AFCON, where he impressed in Morocco, helping Nigeria secure bronze and earning a spot in the Team of the Tournament.

However, during Bassey’s absence, Jorge Cuenca took over the left side of Fulham’s defence and has maintained his place even after Bassey’s return.

The Nigerian international has been an unused substitute in two matches and came off the bench against Manchester United, raising questions about his current role in the team.

Oshaniwa, 35, spoke to Brilia FM, saying:

“It is a very bad one. You’re talking about someone who just finished a very big tournament like AFCON, where he had a brilliant outing. Coming back to sit on the bench is not a good situation at all. He should keep his head up and continue working hard, even in training, while waiting for his chance.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva praised Bassey’s quality but has entrusted the central defence pairing of Joachim Andersen and Cuenca, which has delivered positive results since the reshuffle. Silva said:

“It’s a great thing for the team. I am the first one praising Calvin’s impact at the club, a great, great CB. Huge potential to keep growing. Cuenca has stepped in and shown his qualities. It’s a competition; Cuenca knows the pro he’s up against.”

Bassey has made 17 Premier League appearances this season, scoring once.

His struggle to reclaim a starting role highlights the challenge players face when strong replacements perform well in their absence, even after exceptional performances on the international stage.
