The Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra State, has launched an investigation into an alleged physical altercation between Rev. Fr. Jude Muokwe, a Catholic priest, and a 50-year-old widow, Mrs. Ikeorah Maureen.

The incident, which reportedly left the woman traumatised and in severe pain, has sparked widespread reactions across the state.

According to sources, the altercation occurred on Wednesday at Angel Primary School in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area, where Muokwe serves as the school’s manager.

The dispute reportedly arose during a staff meeting where teachers, including Ikeorah, were discussing a salary increment request to be presented to the school management.

Eyewitnesses claim that Muokwe entered the classroom abruptly and confronted Ikeorah, accusing her of leading the meeting.

Reports suggest that he physically assaulted her with a cane, leading to a heated confrontation. However, conflicting accounts indicate that Ikeorah may have struck the priest first, triggering his retaliation.

A viral video circulating on social media shows Ikeorah visibly distressed, recounting her ordeal and displaying her injuries.

The footage has intensified public outrage, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice.

In response to the controversy, the Catholic Diocese of Awka issued an official statement on Monday, expressing regret over the incident and assuring the public of a comprehensive investigation.

“The Diocese regrets this unfortunate incident, which took place on Wednesday, February 12, 2025,” the statement read.

“The Catholic Diocese of Awka upholds integrity of character and respect for all and cannot condone any type of misconduct in any of our schools.”

The statement, signed by the Chancellor of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, further emphasised that disciplinary measures would be taken based on the investigation’s findings.

“We promise to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and the extent of violation of the ethical standard established by the Diocese for all Diocesan Schools and apply immediate disciplinary actions,” the statement added.

The incident has stirred debates on social media, with many questioning the conduct of both parties.

While some demand strict disciplinary action against the priest, others believe the full context of the altercation should be considered before drawing conclusions.
