Charly Boy Bus Stop Renaming stirs backlash as activists accuse Bariga council of erasing a legacy of resistance by replacing it with Olamide’s name

Charly Boy Bus Stop Renaming has ignited a firestorm of controversy in Lagos as veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, accused the Bariga Local Council Development Area of political cowardice and cultural erasure.

In a symbolic move on the eve of his exit, Council Chairman Kolade David renamed the iconic Charly Boy Bus Stop to Badoo Bus Stop, in honor of hip-hop artist Olamide. He stated the decision aimed to celebrate talents who’ve projected Bariga globally.

But Charly Boy, also known as Area Fada, fired back. “You can rename a place, but you can’t rename a legacy,” he wrote on X, calling the act a fear-driven attempt to silence dissent and erase his decades-long voice against oppression.

The activist maintained that the name “Charly Boy Bus Stop” emerged organically from the people, not political patronage. “This is not just about a signboard. It’s about history, resistance, and fear of a man who never bowed,” he stated powerfully.

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore condemned the decision as “vindictive” and “laced with ethnic undertones.” He emphasized the location’s significance in Nigeria’s creative resistance.

While the state government distanced itself from the decision, citing that street naming is a local government function, the outrage continues to spread.
