Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle on Wednesday explained his decision to make seven second-half substitutions during Nigeria’s 2-2 international friendly draw against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium, citing player fatigue and ongoing post-season recovery.

Eric Chelle told reporters at the post-match press conference that a number of his players were already in off-season mode, having recently concluded their club campaigns, which significantly affected their physical output during the game.

According to the Super Eagles coach, the changes were necessary to manage player workload and avoid further physical strain in a match that demanded high intensity from both teams.

“They were already on vacation. That is why I made seven changes at halftime,” Eric Chelle was quoted as saying by SportoweFakty.

The sweeping alterations saw Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, Paul Onuachu, Calvin Bassey, Raphael Onyedika, Rafiu Durosinmi and Philip Otele introduced, replacing Emmanuel Fernandez, Bruno Onyemaechi, Terem Moffi, Igoh Ogbu, Frank Onyeka, Tochukwu Nnadi and Akor Adams.

Eric Chelle also acknowledged that the team captain struggled to maintain his performance levels as the match progressed, noting that fatigue became increasingly evident after the hour mark.

“Our captain usually does a lot more on the pitch, but after 60 minutes, he was practically gone,” he added.
