Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a stern warning to his commissioners, stating unequivocally that only performance will guarantee their continued stay in office

Speaking on Monday during the commissioning of eight newly constructed duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba, Governor Oborevwori made it clear that mediocrity will no longer be tolerated within the State Executive Council.

Dismissing rumours of a planned blanket dissolution of the cabinet, the governor clarified that only non-performing officials would be removed from their posts. “If you are not performing, we will drop you, and that will not affect other people,” Oborevwori asserted.

He revealed that at least two or three commissioners were currently underperforming and had been directly told so. “I told one of them today at the chapel you are not doing well,” he added, stressing the importance of initiative and visibility from government appointees.

The governor criticised passive commissioners, stating that it was their responsibility to engage actively with governance processes. “As a commissioner, we don’t see you. You talk, carry your memo, and look for the governor, because the governor will not come looking for you,” he said.

Reinforcing his administration’s commitment to accountability, Oborevwori declared that commissioners would be directly held responsible for the success or failure of their ministries.

“If there is a problem in any ministry, hold the commissioner responsible. Any ministry that is doing very well shows that the commissioner is doing very well.”

He also pledged to emulate President Bola Tinubu’s approach to project commissioning by grouping developments for more visible impact. “We want to emulate Mr President in what he did during the inauguration of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road,” the governor stated.

Governor Oborevwori promised to showcase completed projects in Warri before year-end, even if not all initiatives could be inaugurated.

During the event, Commissioner for Finance and Dean of Commissioners, Chief Fidelis Tilije, expressed gratitude to the governor for approving the new residences and appealed for the renovation of 22 existing quarters.

The Commissioner for Housing, Mr Godknows Angele, praised the governor’s support, highlighting that the project included eight duplexes with boys’ quarters and lounges.

With this strong stance, the Delta State government has signalled a renewed emphasis on results-driven governance and ministerial accountability.
