DIAN urges support for local defence equipment to fight insecurity, reduce youth unemployment, and promote indigenous manufacturing in Nigeria

The Defence Industries Association of Nigeria (DIAN) has called on the Federal Government and the Armed Forces to increase patronage of Nigerian-made military equipment.

Speaking at the African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit in Abuja on Thursday, DIAN Secretary-General Kola Balogun said the shift is vital for national security and economic growth.

According to Balogun, consistent investment in local defence manufacturing will strengthen Nigeria’s combat capabilities, reduce reliance on foreign arms, and engage more youths in productive employment.

He warned that unemployment continues to make young people vulnerable to recruitment by insurgent groups.

“It is an idle mind that provides room for ideological manipulation,” he said.

DIAN urges support for local defence equipment not only for economic reasons but also to build a self-reliant, regional security network.

Balogun emphasized that with proper implementation of existing policies like the Local Content Act and Executive Order 5, Nigeria could expand its defence industry and influence across the continent.

“It should no longer be about only Nigerian forces but about African forces, harmonising our capabilities,” he added.

Balogun noted that DIAN is working closely with regulatory bodies to standardize local defence products and ensure they meet global benchmarks.

He also encouraged more local manufacturers to join the association, promising collaboration and advocacy for greater government backing.

“The more we encourage local capability, the more we reduce insecurity, strengthen our economy and secure our future,” he concluded.
