Jack Draper defeats Novak Djokovic in a gripping three-set thriller to advance at the Indian Wells Open and continue his title defence

Defending champion Jack Draper produced one of the standout performances of the season by defeating Novak Djokovic in a gripping three-set contest during the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open on Wednesday.

The world No. 4 Daniil Medvedev had predicted a fiercely physical encounter with no clear favourite, and the match proved his forecast accurate.

The encounter stretched beyond two and a half hours, culminating in a tense third-set tiebreak where the outcome remained in doubt until Draper held his nerve to seal the victory.

Draper, recently returned from a lengthy injury layoff, admitted he approached the match with modest expectations.

Early on, the Brit appeared tentative against the Serbian star he described as “the best tennis player there is.”

However, momentum shifted in the second set as Draper grew more confident, energised by the lively crowd.

He dictated rallies with powerful groundstrokes, unleashed forehand winners, and executed delicate passing shots that drew applause from Djokovic himself.

The intensity of the rallies left the Serbian star struggling at times to keep pace.

In the decisive tiebreak, Draper showed remarkable composure, attacking boldly from his backhand wing and maintaining focus under pressure.

Djokovic acknowledged the narrow margin of defeat, noting that just a few mistakes had determined the outcome.

The victory keeps Draper’s title defence alive, but he faces a rapid turnaround with a clash against Daniil Medvedev scheduled less than 24 hours later.

Medvedev advanced comfortably earlier in the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alex Michelsen, extending his winning streak to eight matches following his recent Dubai Tennis Championships title.

This upcoming matchup will be only the second career meeting between Draper and Medvedev, the first having occurred at the 2024 Italian Open in Rome, where Medvedev prevailed 7-5, 6-4.

Draper’s powerful left-handed serve and aggressive baseline play will test the Russian, while Medvedev’s low-skidding backhand presents a significant challenge.
