BBC Sport ranks the greatest European managers of all time, with Carlo Ancelotti, Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola leading the historic list

European football has long been shaped by legendary tacticians whose influence has defined eras, built dynasties and delivered unforgettable nights on the continent’s biggest stages.

From revolutionary thinkers to serial winners, BBC Sport has compiled a ranking of the greatest European managers of all time, highlighting figures whose impact transcends trophies alone.

Topping the list is Carlo Ancelotti, widely regarded as the most successful European manager in Champions League history. The Italian has won the competition five times across spells with AC Milan and Real Madrid, earning a reputation for calm leadership in the biggest moments.

Liverpool icon Bob Paisley follows closely, celebrated for building one of the most dominant dynasties in European football. He guided the club to three European Cups and established a legacy of sustained continental success.

Zinedine Zidane also features prominently after achieving an extraordinary feat of winning three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid, a record that remains unmatched in the modern era.

José Mourinho, known for his tactical discipline and dramatic triumphs, is recognised for Porto’s shock 2004 Champions League win and Inter Milan’s historic treble-winning campaign.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is also included, credited with combining longevity and success, including two Champions League titles and multiple European honours during his iconic tenure at Old Trafford.

Pep Guardiola, currently at Manchester City, is acknowledged for his tactical innovation and success across Barcelona and England, where his sides have consistently dominated domestic and European competitions.

The list also celebrates historical pioneers such as Nereo Rocco, who introduced defensive tactical structures that shaped Italian football, and Giovanni Trapattoni, one of the few managers to win all major European club competitions.

Footballing philosopher Johan Cruyff is included for his transformative influence at Ajax and Barcelona, where his ideas laid the foundation for modern tactical systems used across Europe today.

Rounding off the list is Unai Emery, recognised for his exceptional record in the Europa League, where he has claimed multiple titles and established himself as one of the competition’s most successful managers.
