Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has disclosed the motivational message he delivered to his players before their commanding 3-0 UEFA Europa League final victory over Freiburg on Wednesday.

Goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers secured a dominant triumph for the Premier League side in Turkey, sealing a historic European title under Emery’s leadership.

The motivation behind the win centred on a clear demand for desire and intensity, according to the Spanish coach, who spoke after the match to TNT Sports.

Emery said he urged his players to embrace responsibility and demonstrate their hunger on the pitch in a final that required focus and discipline.

“We played in a very serious way this year, so focused, and of course, the players – they showed their desire,” Emery said.

“I told them: ‘We need desire in this competition and show it on the field. You are the protagonists.’ And they did it,” he added.

The Aston Villa boss praised his squad for executing the game plan with maturity, highlighting their consistency throughout the European campaign.

Villa’s victory capped a remarkable season in Europe, with the team delivering a controlled and confident performance in the final to overcome their Bundesliga opponents.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu surprised his wife, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, with flowers before sharing a kiss with her at the opening ceremony of the 26th Annual National Women’s Conference in Lagos on Tuesday.

The event was organised by the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) under the theme, “Anchored in Purpose: Be the Blueprint.”

Sanwo-Olu presented the flowers to his wife during his speech at the conference, which brings together women and leaders for discussions and activities focused on women’s empowerment and leadership.

“On behalf of COWLSO and everything that is decent, we want to appreciate you, we want to honour you,” the governor said.

The couple subsequently shared a kiss as Nigerian singer 2Baba’s song, “African Queen”, played at the event.

The conference aims to inspire women, empower leaders and promote a purposeful future through discussions and activities centred on women’s development.
