Hippopotamus Invasion in Adamawa: One killed as floods drive hippos into communities, damaging farmlands and endangering lives in Guyuk and Shelleng LGAs

Hippopotamus Invasion in Adamawa has triggered alarm as displaced hippos, forced from their natural habitat by persistent flooding, entered residential areas in Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas.

Tragedy struck in the Banjiram community, where one young man was reportedly killed by a roaming hippopotamus.

The Chairman of Guyuk LGA, Mr. Shalom Kassa, confirmed the incident, calling the situation “a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihood.”

The animals, normally confined to the Kiri Dam area, have invaded farmlands, riverbanks, and even flooded homes. Residents are terrified, yet powerless.

Existing laws protect wildlife—including hippopotamuses making it illegal for civilians to defend themselves against the aggressive animals.

“This is beyond fear—it’s life-threatening,” Kassa said. “We need urgent intervention.”

Local leaders, including Shelleng LGA Chairman Alhaji Abubakar Abba and the Kwandi Nunguraya of Guyuk, visited Yola to appeal for government support.

Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Awwal Tukur, assured them of a swift response.

The hippopotamus invasion in Adamawa adds to the misery caused by recent flooding in the state, which has already claimed five lives and hospitalized over 50 in Yola town.
