The House of Representatives urges ASUU negotiations to urgently resolve the ongoing strike disrupting Nigeria’s universities.

On Tuesday, the House adopted a motion moved by Oluwaseun Whinghan, representing Badagry Federal Constituency, calling on the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to the negotiating table without delay.

ASUU commenced a two-week warning strike on Monday, citing unresolved issues such as the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, revitalisation funding, earned academic allowances, salary structures, and university autonomy.

The strike threatens to derail academic calendars and worsen frustrations among students, parents, and lecturers alike.

Whinghan emphasised the historic pattern of warning strikes evolving into prolonged work stoppages, warning of the negative impact on Nigeria’s educational system and broader national development.

He noted that education is a constitutional priority under Section 18 of the 1999 Constitution and highlighted the crucial role universities play in innovation, human-capital development, and scientific advancement.

The House resolved to establish an Ad-hoc Committee, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, to mediate between the Federal Government and ASUU.

Additionally, the Committees on University Education and Labour, Employment, and Productivity will immediately intervene to facilitate a lasting agreement.

Lawmakers urged both parties to prioritise dialogue, transparency, and mutual respect, stressing that Nigeria’s future depends on uninterrupted education and a robust university system.

The House also recommended the creation of a permanent joint consultative platform between the Federal Government and university unions to prevent future disruptions.
