The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the NFF over alleged misuse of $25m FIFA and CAF grants meant for football development

House probes NFF FIFA CAF grants following allegations of financial mismanagement and misuse of development funds meant to support Nigerian football.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday resolved to constitute a special investigative committee to examine how the Nigerian Football Federation handled grants totalling $25 million received from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football between 2015 and 2025.

The decision came after lawmakers adopted a motion of urgent public importance co-sponsored by Adedayo Adesola from Lagos and Felix Nwaeke from Rivers State during plenary.

Adesola, who led the debate, alleged that the continued mismanagement of international football grants has crippled the performance of Nigeria’s national teams.

He recalled how, in 2016, FIFA issued an audit query over the handling of a $1.1 million development grant, revealing that over $802,000 lacked proper documentation.

The Lagos lawmaker also cited earlier investigations by the EFCC and ICPC into NFF officials, including former president Amaju Pinnick, over allegations of financial misconduct and questionable spending of sponsorship funds.

He further drew attention to a $1.2 million project in Birnin Kebbi, which the NFF claimed was used to build a mini-stadium. Lawmakers, however, found the facility to be substandard and inconsistent with the reported cost.

According to Adesola, “A physical inspection of the stadium in Birnin Kebbi showed it is a substandard facility that cannot justify the $1.2 million claimed to have been spent. This calls for urgent scrutiny.”

He warned that continued financial mismanagement could undermine preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup playoffs, stressing the need for accountability in Nigerian football administration.

Following a unanimous vote, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas directed the setting up of a special investigative committee to probe NFF finances from 2015 to date.

The committee is mandated to invite the federation’s leadership to present all documents related to the receipt and expenditure of FIFA and CAF grants.

The move is seen as a strong step by the National Assembly to restore transparency and integrity in the management of Nigerian football funds, which have long been plagued by controversy.
