Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma launches free eye surgery programme for retirees and families across 27 LGAs, enhancing senior citizens’ healthcare

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has approved a free eye surgery programme for all retirees and their loved ones across the state’s 27 local government areas.

The initiative, part of the governor’s broader Health Insurance Scheme, is aimed at improving access to quality healthcare and enhancing the well-being of senior citizens, according to Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment.

The Executive Secretary of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, leads the team of world-class ophthalmologists conducting the surgeries, which began Thursday, October 24, 2025, at the IMSU Medical Centre in Owerri.

The first phase of the programme involved 46 pensioners, with procedures carried out under a bulk health purchasing approach, ensuring fairness, efficiency, and measurable results in line with the state’s universal health coverage goal.

“This initiative underscores Governor Uzodimma’s compassion and forward-thinking leadership,” Ugochukwu said. “By fully funding these surgeries, retirees can enjoy better health and quality of life in their later years.”
