India football ban possible as FIFA warns AIFF to adopt constitution by October 30 or risk suspension from world football

India football ban fears have resurfaced after FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) issued a stern warning to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), demanding urgent adoption of a new constitution by October 30 — or face a potential suspension from international football.

In a joint letter sent to AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, the global and regional football bodies expressed “profound concern” over India’s prolonged failure to finalize its football governance framework.

“Failure to meet this schedule will leave us with no alternative but to refer the matter to the relevant FIFA decision-making body,” the letter warned.

FIFA insisted that the AIFF regard the directive as binding, adding that any non-compliance could endanger India’s membership rights in both FIFA and the AFC.

If suspended, Indian national teams and clubs will be barred from international competitions, effectively sidelining the country from the global football scene.

This isn’t the first time India has come close to isolation.

In August 2022, FIFA briefly suspended India due to third-party interference, following the Supreme Court’s appointment of a committee to oversee the AIFF. That suspension was lifted only after Chaubey’s election.

Adding to the crisis, India’s top-tier league, the Indian Super League (ISL), is facing a potential shutdown.

A rights dispute between the AIFF and its commercial partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), threatens to derail the league’s upcoming season.

The ISL’s kickoff has already been delayed, and with the commercial agreement expiring on December 8, uncertainty looms.

Thousands of players and staff face unemployment if the standoff continues.

Players’ union FIFPRO Asia/Oceania raised concerns with FIFA last week, citing the risk to professional footballers’ livelihoods and the broader damage to Indian football’s infrastructure.

The AIFF constitution has been stuck in India’s Supreme Court since 2017, awaiting final approval.

The lack of resolution has now reached critical levels, with FIFA unwilling to tolerate further delays.

India must now act quickly to avoid a second ban in just three years — a move that would further damage its struggling football ecosystem.
