Jos tension Plateau curfew relaxation sparks fresh violence as attacks, fear, and disruption hit residents despite eased movement hours

Heightened tension has gripped Jos, the Plateau State capital, following renewed violence shortly after the relaxation of a 48-hour curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government in response to deadly attacks in the area.

The Plateau State Government had earlier imposed the curfew in Jos North Local Government Area after gunmen attacked residents of Angwan Rukuba, leaving at least 28 people dead.

The restriction was later eased, allowing movement between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily to enable residents resume limited activities.

However, the Jos tension Plateau curfew relaxation quickly gave way to fresh unrest on Wednesday morning, as reports emerged of hoodlums attacking motorists and passersby across several parts of the city.

A young man was reportedly killed along the road leading to the University of Jos Permanent Site after being attacked by suspected hoodlums, deepening fear among residents.

Several motorists also had their windscreens smashed in areas including Terminus, Bauchi Road, Gangere, Farin Gada, Tina Junction, and Chobe, forcing widespread panic and the shutdown of some businesses.

Banks in affected locations were also said to have closed operations as security concerns escalated, leaving commercial activity paralysed in parts of the metropolis.

Residents described the situation as alarming, urging authorities to strengthen security presence and prevent further breakdown of law and order.

Many expressed concern that the easing of the curfew had not translated into improved safety.

The University of Jos Alumni Association called for immediate intervention, urging security agencies to deploy enhanced surveillance and rapid response teams across campuses, hostels, and access routes to protect students and staff.

The association also advised students to remain indoors and stay vigilant while authorities work to restore calm in the troubled areas.

Security sources confirmed that operatives had been deployed to flashpoints across Jos, with efforts ongoing to stabilise the situation and prevent further escalation.

Despite official assurances, residents continue to call for urgent and sustained security action to restore confidence in the state capital.
