The 20-year-old England international has yet to make a senior appearance this season, missing both the opening day defeat to Arsenal and the recent 1-1 draw at Fulham.

Amorim left Mainoo on the bench at Craven Cottage, preferring experienced options like Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount in midfield.

During the Fulham game, Amorim tactically shifted players, replacing Casemiro with Benjamin Sesko and moving Mason Mount back into midfield, which pushed Mainoo further down the pecking order.

Despite Fernandes missing a first-half penalty, his position in the squad remains secure, leaving Mainoo’s best chance for game time likely in upcoming League Cup fixtures, such as the match against Grimsby on Wednesday.

Speaking about Mainoo’s situation, Amorim said, “He is fighting for the position now with Bruno. I like Mason Mount there because we want to score a goal.

When I changed it, I felt the team needed to return to one holding midfielder. So he just needs to fight for the position with Bruno in training. Like it should be at Manchester United.”
