Brown Ideye denies saying broke retired footballers should be jailed, calling reports false and urging empathy in athlete welfare discussions.

Brown Ideye jail comment denial has taken center stage after the former Super Eagles striker strongly refuted reports claiming he called for financially struggling retired footballers to be jailed.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner came under heavy criticism last week following comments made during an online debate, which were widely circulated and misrepresented by several media outlets.

In a statement titled “Setting the Record Straight” released on Sunday, the ex-West Bromwich Albion forward addressed the controversy head-on.

“Let me be clear: These statements are completely false and misrepresent my views,” Ideye said.

He emphasized that his comments were taken out of context and clarified that he has always championed supportive measures for athletes, not punishment.

“I would never suggest punitive action towards anyone who struggles financially.

Instead, I advocate for offering support, training, and mentorship to help athletes transition from football to life after the game.”

Ideye stressed the need for empathy and real solutions in conversations about retired footballers, condemning the media reports as damaging to his reputation.

“This article is misleading of my person and character, and I strongly condemn it. I urge the public to disregard it,” he added.

The uproar began after Ideye advised active players to prioritize saving and financial planning, in reaction to former defender Taribo West’s emotional speech at the funeral of goalkeeper Peter Rufai.

West had accused football authorities of abandoning retired Nigerian players.

During the online discussion, Ideye had encouraged financial discipline:

“Footballers, start saving for your future from day one. No matter how small your salary is, put something aside.”

However, one controversial reply to a social media user—where Ideye allegedly wrote, “They should be jailed for life if, after they retired from playing, they can’t feed themselves”—sparked the backlash. The 34-year-old now insists the remark was misunderstood and misrepresented.

On social media, Ideye added a sharp retort aimed at those drawing hasty conclusions:

“School is not a scam. Try to learn how to read and understand the whole story before jumping into conclusions,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

As one of Nigeria’s most experienced forwards, with appearances at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2013 AFCON title to his name, Ideye says he remains committed to using his platform to promote the long-term welfare of Nigerian athletes.
