Lagos furniture budget claim clarified as government explains ₦4.2bn allocation was mainly for Round House reconstruction, not office items

The Lagos State Government on Friday dismissed reports alleging that ₦4.2 billion was allocated in the 2026 budget for office furniture and microphones for the Office of the Deputy Governor, describing the Lagos furniture budget claim as a misinterpretation of approved capital expenditure.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, which explained that the total capital allocation for the Deputy Governor’s Office in the 2026 fiscal year stands at ₦4,247,816,006.

According to the ministry, public commentary suggesting that the entire amount was meant for furniture procurement and the purchase of 30 microphones was inaccurate and misleading.

Government officials stated that ₦4,077,816,006, representing the overwhelming portion of the allocation, is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Round House complex, a six-storey administrative facility accommodating more than 50 offices.

The reconstruction project, the statement noted, includes structural upgrades, retrofitting works and installation of alternative energy infrastructure aimed at improving operational efficiency within the complex.

The remaining ₦170 million, officials clarified, covers office equipment, furniture, fittings and other capital items required for administrative use.

To reinforce transparency, the government disclosed that screenshots of the relevant budget master sheet were attached to the statement to allow public scrutiny of the figures.

The state government emphasised that its budgeting process follows established accounting standards, fiscal discipline and due process requirements, urging media organisations and stakeholders to verify financial information through official channels before publication.

Authorities also expressed regret over what they described as a misunderstanding arising from budget classification, reiterating their commitment to prudent and accountable management of public resources.
