LASU students have accused campus security of attacking them during a peaceful protest over their exclusion from the university’s direct entry admission list

LASU students have accused security operatives of assaulting and brutalising them during a peaceful protest at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo campus, on Tuesday, over their exclusion from the institution’s direct entry admission list.

The protesters, who are diploma graduates of the university, said they were denied 200-level admission into degree programmes despite meeting all stipulated requirements and earlier assurances from the management.

Eyewitnesses said the protest, which began peacefully, turned violent when LASU security personnel allegedly descended on the students, dispersing them with force.

Videos circulating online showed some protesters being chased, beaten, and dragged across the campus, leaving several injured.

“We were only asking for fairness and transparency,” one of the protesters said. “We were told that anyone with a CGPA of 3.0 and above would get direct entry, but now the requirement has suddenly been raised to 3.5.”

Many of the affected students reportedly graduated with CGPAs between 4.0 and 4.8, but were disqualified after the benchmark was increased without prior notice.

The change, they said, dashed their hopes after purchasing JAMB Direct Entry forms based on earlier agreements.

“We submitted appeals to the Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Student Affairs, and even the Lagos State Ministry of Education,” another student explained. “But no one responded, so we decided to protest peacefully.”

Placards bearing messages such as “Keep your promise, LASU” and “We deserve fairness” were displayed during the demonstration before security officials intervened.

Some students were reportedly hospitalised while others sustained bruises and emotional trauma.

“We are not fighting LASU; we are fighting for our future,” a protester said. “If the department is full, they can offer us related courses. We just want to continue our education.”

As of press time, the university management had not issued an official statement on the incident.
