Lionel Messi India tour sees the football legend unveil a 21-metre Kolkata statue, celebrating his World Cup triumph and connecting with fans

Lionel Messi, eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and Inter Miami forward, unveiled a 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself in Kolkata, India, on Saturday, thrilling thousands of fans. The monument depicts Messi holding aloft the World Cup and forms part of his three-day GOAT Tour across India.

The unveiling was conducted virtually for security reasons, though a “Hola Messi” fan zone in Kolkata allowed supporters to view a life-sized replica of Messi seated on a throne.

The hall also recreated his Miami home, complete with mannequins representing his family members.

Messi, 38, is scheduled to visit Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, including friendly matches and public appearances.

In Hyderabad, he will attend a concert in his honour and participate in another friendly match, while in New Delhi, a potential meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planned.

Monti Paul, the sculptor responsible for the monument, said the statue was completed in 40 days and represents the tallest sculpture he has ever created. “It is a matter of pride to build the sculpture of Messi,” he said.

Fans welcomed the tour with enthusiasm. Samir Nandy, a football supporter in Kolkata, described the statue as a “fitting tribute” to Messi’s resilience and legacy.

Messi, reflecting on his previous visit to India, praised the country’s passionate football culture. “India is a very special country and I have good memories from my time there 14 years ago,” he said. “I look forward to meeting a new generation of fans and sharing the love I have for this beautiful game.”

The GOAT Tour celebrates Messi’s achievements, including his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award and Inter Miami’s MLS title.
