Liverpool retires Jota’s shirt number 20 to honour the late forward after his tragic death, marking the club’s first-ever eternal tribute across all teams

Liverpool retires Jota’s shirt number 20 in a historic and emotional tribute to the late Portuguese forward, Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain.

The club made the announcement on Friday night, confirming that the number 20 shirt will never be worn again at any level — including the Men’s, Women’s, and Academy teams.

Jota passed away alongside his brother, André, in a fatal crash. They were both laid to rest last Saturday in an emotional ceremony attended by family, friends, and members of the football community.

Liverpool’s decision came after close consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family. According to FSG CEO Michael Edwards, it is the first time in Liverpool’s history that a squad number has been retired.

“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention,” Edwards said via the club’s website.

“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and enjoyed a successful spell, winning several trophies including the Premier League title. He quickly became a fan favourite for his work rate, versatility, and crucial goals.
