Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu reshuffle strengthens Nigerian Army leadership and operations as Tinubu urges decisive action against insecurity

Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu reshuffle has brought a wave of renewed energy into the Nigerian Army as the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff announced major postings and appointments across the force.

The move, which took effect immediately, is designed to strengthen leadership, improve command efficiency, and enhance ongoing military operations nationwide.

In a statement on Thursday, the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, confirmed that the reshuffle affects several senior officers, reflecting what she described as a “strategic realignment of command roles to achieve optimal results.”

Among the key appointments, Maj. Gen. Bamidele Alabi becomes Chief of Policy and Plans at the Army Headquarters, while Maj. Gen. Jamal Abdulsalam moves to the Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Operations.

Maj. Gen. Peter Mala has been posted to the Training and Doctrine Command as Commander.

The sweeping Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu reshuffle also includes other strategic moves such as Maj. Gen. Mayirenso Saraso’s appointment as Chief of Operations (Army) and Maj. Gen. Isa Abdullahi’s redeployment as Chief of Administration (Army). Similarly, Maj. Gen. Musa Etsu-Ndagi becomes Chief of Civil-Military Affairs.

Further demonstrating his reform-driven approach, Lt. Gen. Shaibu appointed new Corps Commanders, including Maj. Gen. Godwin Mutkut for Infantry, Maj. Gen. Umar Abubakar for Armour Corps, and Maj. Gen. John Adeyemo for Artillery.

In the education sector, Brig. Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed now serves as Acting Corps Commander, Education.

The reshuffle also extends to training institutions. Maj. Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye has been appointed Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, while new heads were named for the Army’s Signal, Artillery, and Finance schools.

At the operational level, Maj. Gen. Saidu Audu takes command as Force Commander of the Multi-National Joint Task Force in N’Djamena, Maj. Gen. Warrah Idris leads Operation FANSAN YAMMA in the North-West, and Maj. Gen. Oluremi Fadairo becomes General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander of Operation UDO KA in the South-East.

Shaibu, while addressing the new appointees, urged them to discharge their duties with professionalism, loyalty, and integrity, noting that the current security situation demands competence and collaboration.

“The Nigerian Army must remain a bastion of unity and courage. I expect each officer to lead with purpose, uphold our core values, and work collectively towards peace and stability,” he said.

The announcement came shortly after President Bola Tinubu decorated Lt. Gen. Shaibu and other newly appointed service chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The President charged them to deliver “results, not excuses,” emphasising that Nigerians expect a decisive end to terrorism, banditry, and other national security threats.

The Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu reshuffle marks one of the first major steps by the new Chief of Army Staff since assuming office, signalling a bold intent to reposition the Nigerian Army for smarter, technology-driven, and people-focused operations.
