Man United defeat Brentford 2-1 to move closer to Champions League qualification, with Casemiro and Sesko on target at Old Trafford

Manchester United, moved within touching distance of Champions League qualification after a 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford, a result powered by goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Šeško.

The win strengthened United’s hold on third place in the Premier League table and left them needing just two points from their remaining four matches to secure a return to Europe’s elite competition.

Casemiro opened the scoring in the 11th minute, finishing from close range after a well-worked set-piece routine involving Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.

The Brazilian midfielder, who has now scored four goals in his last six appearances, once again proved decisive, underlining his importance in the final stretch of the season.

Benjamin Šeško doubled United’s advantage just before half-time, latching onto a precise pass from Fernandes before firing home from 10 yards to give the hosts a commanding lead.

Brentford pushed back in the second half and eventually reduced the deficit in the 87th minute through Mathias Jensen, whose curling effort set up a tense finish.

Despite late pressure, United held firm to secure a crucial victory that edges them closer to a Champions League return for the first time since the 2023–24 season.

Interim manager Michael Carrick has now overseen a stabilisation of results since taking over in January, with the team responding strongly after earlier setbacks in the campaign.

United’s next major test comes against Liverpool at Old Trafford, a fixture that could prove decisive in the race for a top-three finish.

Carrick, still awaiting a decision on his long-term future, continues to strengthen his case for the permanent role as results improve under his leadership.
