Methodist Church University Abia: Church partners with Governor Otti to establish a new university in Umuimenyi, Bende, to boost education in the state

Methodist Church University Abia plans have moved a step closer to reality as the Church seeks a strategic partnership with the Abia State Government for the institution’s establishment in Umuimenyi, Bende Local Government Area.

The announcement was made by the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Oliver Abah, during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti on Thursday.

He expressed the Church’s commitment to supporting education and contributing to national development through the proposed Methodist University.

“We seek a collaborative partnership to establish the University in Abia State to complement the giant strides of our performing Governor,” the Prelate said.

The Methodist Church, a pioneer in educational and healthcare development in Nigeria, is positioning this university project as a continuation of its long-standing legacy in nation-building.

According to Prelate Abah, the initiative is expected to generate opportunities for skills development and capacity building among youths, while also enhancing socio-economic growth in the region.

However, he raised concerns about land-related challenges in Lodu, Lohum, and Nkpa areas and appealed to the state government to step in and prevent land grabbers from interfering with the project.

Governor Alex Otti welcomed the initiative and pledged his administration’s full support.

Emphasizing education as a core pillar of his governance, he noted that the state allocates the largest share of its budget to the sector.

“Setting up a University is one of the things you [the Methodist Church] are known for.

It would be our pleasure to partner with you,” Otti stated.

He also acknowledged the Church’s historical contributions to education, health, and missionary work in Nigeria and lauded its vision to expand its impact in Abia State.
